PHOTOGRAPHER, LONDON, UK

Amanda grew up in Swindon, Wiltshire, where she enjoyed a pretty carefree childhood with all the freedoms that the 1970’s and 80’s offered. She is staunchly independent and attributes some of that independence to sharing her childhood with her brother: he never displayed the same eagerness as her to get outside and see what the day had to offer. Rather than waiting around for him she would venture out alone, to wander & observe the world around her, sometimes knocking on neighbours doors or cycling to visit family on the other side of town. It’s with the same sense of inquisitiveness and wonder that Amanda approaches her practice today.

Observational photography comes naturally to her; shaping the world into frames as she experiences place, but Amanda’s journeys through photography have reached far and wide; from assisting Advertising photographers, working for years in editorial, mostly covering lifestyle and interiors, and moving into social photography as she raised her son. For the past ten to fifteen years she has specialised in portraits, and social documentary photography, working with charities and third sector organisations prior to the pandemic. She has taught, written and spoken about photography, and hopes to be doing this for a long time yet!

In the Autumn of 2020 circumstances dictated that Amanda find a job. She has been working full-time for a Museum Grade Picture Framer since then, but the time has come to get back to freelancing, so from July Amanda will be available for commissions! A new area of work that she’ll be offering is photographing artwork for Artists. ‘Over the past year I have been photographing the works of emerging artist, Charly Helyar, and will be offering this service in more depth over the summer - look out for a new page here!’

Part of Amanda’s practice is writing: she uses it in her work, and as a way to reflect on life in general. She writes a blog which comes out roughly once a month. To keep up with exhibitions and project news you can read or subscribe here.
