4 x 4 x 4

4 x 4 x 4 is the framework and working title of a social documentary project, which began in 2019. I traveled from my North London base in 4 directions: north, east, south and west, at 4 distances: 5, 10, 20 and 40 miles, by 4 modes of transport: Cycling, Walking, Train, or Bus. Each place was crudely plotted on a map, with the total number of locations being sixteen. I never intended to visit every place by every mode of transport, but I have now visited all but one of these locations at least twice.

I feel that I have made almost all the images required to complete the project, but due to my circumstances following the Pandemic’s arrival, I have had little time to bring this to a completed form. The intention is to present the project as a book. I am glad to say that circumstances have just changed, and I will have more time to dedicate to this purpose. I’ll be taking a deep dive into the contents of all the notebooks that I have written in, related to this project, and progress my book dummies and start to make contact with people who can help me on this quest. If that is you, please get in touch!

The hope for the project is to open a dialogue about our lives, set in the context of location. The images I have made are suggestive of the world we live in; taking in the micro and the macro, the often overlooked. There is nothing remarkable about these scenes, but is there anything remarkable about our lives from day-to-day? Once viewed as a whole, perhaps the world will make more sense?
